Derby, Connecticut

This is a building portrait I tried to post recently, but couldn't get to upload correctly because the Google+ robots kept trying to make it look more professional. See Working Pictures for more on that.

It's still winter light for these "building portraits" even though we're more than halfway through March.

Prints

I made some prints at the beginning of the week, and thought I'd take a first look at things from the 'building portraits' series. There is so much detail and texture in these subjects that I decided to go directly to an 11x14-ish print size, which seems to be a good choice. I want to spend a little time with these and then print some more of them. I'll also want to see how well the texture rendition works at 15x20.

White Brick Building

Norwich, Connecticut

There's quite a bit going on here, but it still seems like a building portrait.

Probation Center

Norwich, Connecticut

Those are the offices that now occupy this former theater. Or was the theater a modification of an older existing structure? This featured in a post over at WP a little while back, seen from another angle as more of a street scene with quite a bit of activity. Here it turns up in building portrait mode.

RJ's CAFE

Derby, Connecticut

Well, used to be RJ's Cafe. Looks as though it was other things before. I had a long and productive shoot yesterday. It was a relatively balmy 50° F in the early afternoon, melting some of the snow piled everywhere. The light was unusual. It was still wintry, but the high-elevation clouds that obscured the sun did something similar to the "edge of the rain" lighting condition that I like so much. The sky blued-up at times, then went back to cloud. It did something interesting to the color of everything. More to come on both blogs.

White, with Vertical Blinds

Manchester, Connecticut

During breaks in the snow and cold weather, I've been making new photographs, many of them in some of the old factory towns of Central Connecticut. Some of these have made their way to my Working Pictures blog, but I've found that there's a subset of these pictures that's been forming, almost without my knowledge. These are similar to the kind of thing that gets the "urban landscape" label over at WP, but they're quite a lot more formal and concentrate more clearly on specific buildings. They are almost portraits of buildings, rather than urban scenes that contain buildings as just one of many elements. So I thought I'd begin posting some of these here as a separate group.

Kickstarter Sponsors, 11x14 Portfolios

Kickstarter Sponsors of the American Drive-in Theater Project:

Since you're here, you've probably received the Kickstarter Survey for the $350 level. You get a portfolio of six “11x14” (trim size is actually 12x15.3) exhibition prints, which I’ll be producing here in my ‘digital atelier’ in the coming days. You will also receive a copy of the American Drive-in Theater custom calendar which has just been delivered here. There are two portfolios to choose from. One set of pictures that I like in monochrome, and another set that also presents the range of the journey with pictures I like in color. You may choose either the mono or color portfolio. The first question in the Survey asks for your mailing address for the Rewards package. The second question asks which portfolio you'd prefer. Please return the Survey even if you've already sent me your address for the postcard. Here are thumbnails of the two portfolios.

The theaters, top to bottom are:

(Monochrome), The Phoenix, Houston, MO; The Brazos, Granbury, TX; The Apache, Globe, AZ; The Skyline, Barstow, CA; The Motor-Vu, Parma, ID; The Comanche, Buena Vista, CO.

(Color), The Kanopolis, Kanopolis, KS; The Sandell, Clarendon, TX; The Apache, Globe, AZ; The Roubidoux, Riverside, CA; The Skyline, Shelton, WA; The Basin, Mount Pleasant, UT.

You might remember that I’d also planned to include “a fun souvenir” from one of the theaters. That had to be amended. At each theater where I talked with owners or managers, I asked about custom souvenir products like postcards, bumper stickers, refrigerator magnets. With only one exception, the reaction was, “Gee, what a great idea! Er....no, we don’t.” So I will substitute a small “bonus print” with each Rewards package. Look for it inserted into the calendar.

Route Planning

By way of explanation, the only way you can put pictures into your "story" or into the "Update" blog at Kickstarter is by linking to a URL. So I'm using WPII to put pictures in a place where they acquire a unique URL I can link to. For the full story, go over to my Kickstarter project and click on "Updates."
